A motorist hit metal railings outside shops in Layton earlier this morning, badly damaging his car.

The driver, understood to be in his 30s or 40s, crashed after swerving to avoid another car at around 8.22am, a police spokesman said.

He was not hurt in the smash, but his car – thought to be a Renault – is understood to be a write-off.

Police were called but did not attend the scene, at the roundabout where Westcliffe Drive becomes Layton Road, and were unable to give any more information.
